Welcome to Vallis First School

School life at Vallis

We seek to foster a love of learning in an exciting and friendly environment. We aim to help all our children feel safe and happy and part of our school family.  Children are recognised as individuals and we seek to cater for their needs whatever their ability. We want them to develop at their pace and achieve the very best they can!

Children begin their journey at Vallis in one of our EYFS classes – Wren or Firecrest –  where they have their own playground. They move downstairs to Key Stage 1 (KS1) for Year 1 and Year 2 and back upstairs for Key Stage 2 (KS2 – Years 3 & 4). In addition we have Nest Classroom, which is our nurture room, giving children a calm and safe space if they need it. To see more about each class, including the teaching team, please click on the specific class tab.

Despite being in such a historic building in the middle of a conservation area we have a wonderful Forest School area which all the children get to use during their time in the school. We are regular winners of Frome in Bloom awards, with pupils attending the ceremonies alongside our staff to celebrate their success.

Reading is a passion at Vallis, so we make sure children have as much access to our Library as possible to encourage a love of reading and books in general. KS2 children are further encouraged in their reading with our reading reward scheme – children earn bookmarks depending on how much they have read, earn the chance to become a Reading Buddy who helps children in EYFS and KS1 with their reading and finally earn their Reading Ambassador badge.

In Years 3 & 4 children have swimming lessons at our local Sport and Fitness Centre, and local company I.G Sports Coaching also come in weekly, giving children additional sports opportunities alongside regular PE lessons during lunchtimes, after school and during lesson time.

In Year 4, children have the opportunity to attend a 2 night residential outward bound course. We currently use Osmington Bay which is run by PGL, where the children get to try a range of outdoor activities designed to build confidence in a beautiful seaside setting.

Giving the children the chance to get involved and make a difference is very important to us, so we currently have a very committed Eco Council and Well-Being Council – for more information see the Pupil Voice tab.
